UPDATE: I found what seems to be a FAQ from the admins on the closing of bitgamer
1. bitGAMER has closed down. This is not a joke.
2. We tried to find new, trusted owners to carry the torch, but after years of attempts fell though, we had no choice but to close down the site. We wouldn't be willing to transfer sensitive database data to a third-party that we're not well acquainted with.
3. We didn't give advance warning due to the nature of the site. We don't want to give any advance notice in case someone was ready to kick someone's door in at the last minute.
4. If you are a donor, then we greatly appreciate your support that allowed bitGAMER to live a long, successful life in the service of its community. If you donated within the last month, then you can contact an administrator to get a refund.
5. We are shutting down because it's time for us to move on. There are no secret meaning beyond what was posted on the front page.
6. Lastly, thanks again for all of your support over the years. 7 years is a long time for any site to live, especially a site of this nature. We appreciate your support which has allowed us such a long life. Thank you.
sad! :(
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing maybe server costs got too high and they weren't bringing enough money in to both keep the site afloat and to line their pockets as thickly as they'd have liked to as well. Or maybe the Feds came sniffing around a little too closely for their comfort and they decided that it was best to wash their hands of the site before they and their users got screwed.
ReplyDeleteReally though, I couldn't really care less why they closed the site, nor am I particularly bothered that they did. Whatever the reason for it, they did what they felt they had to do, and like them it's time for those of us who were members of the site to move on.
Anyway, I'm glad that they'll be reimbursing folks who donated in the last month, or so they say. My only worry when I noticed that the site was closed was that they were going to leave those folks screwed, and they addressed that concern. Whether or not they'll actually follow through is an entirely different matter altogether, but at least they acknowledged the matter. That's encouraging.
omg....
ReplyDeletegod dammit bitgamer we loved you!
